Bridge is mind sport, a challenge of mental rather than physical capacity and stamina. Consequently we have many members who have mobility challenges - whether due to accident, disease or just the passage of years.
It is one of our club's strengths that we welcome and try to assist these valuable members. We are fortunate that Meals on Wheels have agreed to give us use of eight of their weekday parking spots from noon onwards. Even with this we do not have a lot of accessible parking near the club-house. What we have, we need to look after carefully.
Join us for our second major congress of 2019 - this one being our Swiss Pairs event using IMP scoring. Check all the event details.
In 2018 the event was very well received by those that participated. Ronnie Ng did a great job as director and everything went very smoothly. Volunteer caterer Cassandra Mitchell provided wonderful food all day which was much appreciated.
The 2018 winners were Peter Jeffrey and Yimin Lee ahead of runners-up David Hudson and Paul Lavings. The Novice Prize (under 100) went to Sarah Young and Rob Scott and the best Peninsula Pair was Vivien Eldridge and David Farmer.
Congratulations to our long term member, Dr Joan Castle, who was awarded in the Queen's Birthday honours, the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to medicine.
A former medical practitioner in private practice at Dee Why, Dr Castle was also a honorary consultant physician at Manly Hospital for 35 years and worked pro bono at diabetes clinics at Sydney and Royal North Shore hospitals. She also established a diabetes clinic at Manly Hospital.
Dear fellow Peninsula Club member,
I am writing to you today in my capacity as Treasurer of the Club. The Club's annual accounts will be formally audited this year and our external auditor requires that we verify the values expressed in the Club's Balance Sheet (the financial statement of our assets and liabilities) as this reflects the equity that we as members have in the Club. We need to do a few things that will not impact you, such as complete a stock take of our fixed assets - computers, tables, etc. to verify that they exist and are appropriately valued, and this will be done by Committee members.
Join us for some relaxed kitchen bridge on Sunday 14 July at 3pm at the Peninsula Bridge Club.
Get together your foursome or just come along and we'll find you a table. Friends and family welcome.
BYO drinks and nibbles. Tea and coffee will be available. $3 members and visitors.
Each table will deal their own cards and score or not score as they wish. No masterpoints, no Bridgemates, no stress! Inquiries to Beth Randall.
On Monday 23 June the Members and Novices Teams was a fun day with many novice members enjoying the first or second experience playing in a team event. Photos of all the teams can be found on our PBC Facebook Group - please consider joining this group!
It was well attended with two categories - a Green category with a partly experienced Novice pair combined with Restricted team mates, and a Blue category with a Novice pair with no teams experience combined with an Open pair. Everyone played the Peninsula Basic System to make it a pleasant more even playing experience for our novice players.
May has been another busy month with members competing in a variety of events and competitions both at the club and elsewhere in the country.
Congratulations to everyone, especially to the 12 pairs who entered the new Cath Whiddon Cup, for members with less than 15 Master Points. Well done to Margaret Wayland and Peter Sate who won the 3 week event.
Looking ahead to this month, on 24 June, the Members and Novices (under 50MP) Teams event is a lovely opportunity for newer and more experienced players to team up and play in a friendly introduction to Teams - find a four and sign up!
Thank you to the club for launching a tournament for all of us falling under 15 MPs, commemorating the fabulous Cath Whiddon.
Most of us have had lessons with Cath and have learned so much from her. Appreciating her kindness and sense of humour in the face of our sometimes difficult learning experience. Thing is we are all improving thanks to Cath and remember that if diamonds are not forever, and clubs are for cave people, we will always bid hearts or spades and hope for the best.
Congratulations to all the pairs who participated over three consecutive Mondays and to our inaugural winners Margaret Wayland and Peter Sate, and runners-up Doreen Heideman and Hazel Carroll!
